Finding songs/arias using the catalogue

It is very important to use Primo (the online catalogue) to quickly find a piece of music.

Type in the search box the name of the composer and the song title (omit 'stop words', e.g. The A An)

EXAMPLE

 

To find: Mädchen oder Weibchen by Mozart:  Type: mozart weibchen tp

Notes:

  • keep it simple
  • last name of composer is usually sufficient
  • words with diacritics (Mädchen) are sometimes problematic; if you have to use it try it with the diacritics and without
  • add tp to limit results to scores (i.e. exlude recordings and books)
 

If this does not work, establish if the song comes from a larger work. Then search for the larger work.
Mädchen oder Weibchen is from the opera Zauberflöte.

Browse vocal scores

It is very important to use Primo (the online catalogue) to quickly find a piece of music.

However it is also useful to 'browse' (when you are not looking for a specific work) through the scores to see what is available.

There are different sections of vocal sheet music which can be browsed:

    1. Opera - Vocal scores
      1. Shelf number: TP 780.7 then A-Z by composer, e.g. TP 780.7 MOZA,  TP 780.7 VERD,  TP 780.7 WAGN
      2. Note: the vocal score will include the arias from the opera.
    2. Musicals - Vocal scores
      1. Shelf number: TP 780.8 then A-Z by composer, e.g. TP 780.8 LOEW,  TP 780.8 WEBB,  TP 780.8
      2. Note: the vocal score will include the songs from the musical.
    3. Scores containing one or more songs/arias by one composer

  1. Shelf number: TP 780.3 then A-Z by composer, e.g. TP 780.3 BRAH,  TP 780.3 MOZA,  TP 780.3SCHUB

There are also numerous song anthologies. The contents of these anthologies are searchable in the online catalogue.If you search for the composer and the title the online catalogue (Primo) will retrieve the record.
