Introduction

Mpox Notification Guidelines: Ensuring Compliance for Health Professionals

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) would like to remind health professionals about their responsibility to report Notifiable Medical Conditions (NMC) timeously and accurately. Health professionals are encouraged to notify with detailed clinical information. This is critical as the surveillance of NMCs involves the systematic collection, analysis, and use of epidemiologic data to provide scientifically proven and accurate information to detect and act against public health threats.

Mpox is a category 1 notifiable medical condition, and any suspected or confirmed cases in the public or private sector are legally required to be notified within 24 hours of diagnosis (confirmed or suspected) as stipulated in the International Health Regulations, 2005 (IHR), the National Health Act, 61 of 2003, and the Regulations Relating to Surveillance and the Control of Notifiable Medical Conditions (2017).
