At UCT Libraries, books are organised according to subject. Each subject (and sub-subject) is assigned a number. This number, which can be called a call number or a shelf number, is like a street address for a book. At UCT Libraries, because we use the Dewey Decimal System, this number can also be called the Dewey number. Here are the main shelf numbers in Music and Dance:
Music
General principles and musical forms
Vocal music
Music for single voices
Instruments & instrumental ensembles
Ensembles with one instrument per part
Keyboard & other instruments
Stringed instruments (Chordophones)
Wind instruments (Aerophones)
(Optional number) - at the WH Bell Music Library, books about music technology and subjects less suited elsewhere are kept here
Recreational and performing arts
Public performances
Stage presentations
Indoor games and amusements
Indoor games of skill
