Step by step guide on how to use the search facility of OpenUCT

Search by Author

Step 1: Go to the OpenUCT homepage and type in the name of the author in the search box. Start with the surname of the author followed by a comma, then by the author's first name and click on search like in the example below:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Step 2: Then filter the results using the filters on the left side of your screen. Results can be filtered using Author, Subject, Date, Publication Type, Department, Faculty, and by Type of Degree like in the example below:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Step 3: The original results for the author Andrew Hutchison was  initially 133 items, after filtering by the department the results now stand at 29 items like in the example below:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Search by title

Step 1: Open inverted commas then type or paste the title or part of the title of the item you are searching for on the search box and close your inverted commas, then click search. This forces the database to only retrieve items that have the exact same words and phrases in the exact same order as in the title you are looking for like in the example below: 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Step 2: The filters on the left side of the screen in the example below can be utilized to filter your results:

 

 

Step 3: Click on the title of the item to open the record of the item you are interested in. The pdf file of the item you are interested in can be downloaded by clicking on the pdf file under "Files in this item" on the bottom right of your screen like in the example below:

Search by keywords

Step 1: Type in your keywords in the search box and put them in inverted commas and click on search. Putting them in inverted commas forces the database to only retrieve items that have the exact same words and phrases in the exact same order like in the example below:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Step 2: Use the filters on the left side of the screen to filter your results like, in the example below: 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Step 3: In the example below the original 2458 items results has been filtered by Date, Publication Type and by Subject leaving us with only 20 items.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Step 4: Click on the title of the item to open the record of the item you are interested in. The pdf file can be downloaded by clicking on the pdf file under "Files in this item" on the bottom right of your screen like in the example below:
