Civil Engineering Library Guide: Journals & Articles

How to find information - a guide for Civil Engineering students

Journal FAQ's

What is a journal?

A journal is like a magazine where scholars report their research findings as articles.

What is the difference between a book and a journal article?

A book is a longer, and a usually more comprehensive text on a subject.

Journal articles are shorter, and more specific. They are published more frequently and so have more up-to-date information than books do.

Why use journals?
  • They are usually more up to date than books.
  • As most of them have been checked by other academics (i.e. peer reviewed), they are more reliable than general web articles and newspaper articles.
  • They are shorter to read than books.

Journals at UCT Libraries

At UCT Libraries we have journals in both print and electronic format.

To find print journals, use Primo. The journals are physically housed in three different areas:

  • The journals of the current year are in the Current Journals low shelves at Research Wing, Jagger Level 6.
  • At the basement you will find journals published after 1965.
  • Journals published in and before 1965 are stored in remote storage.

To find electronic journals, use the Journal Search in Primo. Remember to search for the journal title, and not the article title.

If you would like to access a full volume of a journal published in and prior to 1965, please make a request at the Loans Desk.

If you would like to have a scanned copy of an article from a journal that have been published in or prior to 1965 please send a request by sending an email to your librarian awot.gebregziabher@uct.ac.za
