2018 marks the centenary of the birth of Nelson Mandela who has become a symbol of moral authority and social justice. In the spirit of living his legacy, we reflected on Mandela's life through selections from our collection of archival and audio-visual material, books and posters. #Mandela100
In 2019, Mandela Day fell on the same week as National Archives Awareness Week, so we have used the opportunity to highlight some of his archival materials. This includes the photographs, Graduation book and speech made by Nelson Mandela when he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by UCT in November 1990, on display in the Main Library foyer.
In an age of fake news and solipsistic world views, it is this legacy of the late Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and his commitment to truth as an unfettered doctrine for democracy that we chose to honour on Mandela Day in 2020.
