Film Studies Library Guide: Theses and Dissertations

A guide to resources for Film Studies @ UCT Libraries

How to find a thesis in UCT Libraries

Masters and doctoral theses that have been submitted to UCT and that are available for loan are kept on Level 5 of the Research Wing in the Chancellor Oppenheimer Library or in the appropriate branch library.   Copies not for loan are kept in the off-campus store and can be asked for at the Loans Desk.

UCT theses can be found through our online catalogue, in the same way as books if the author and/or title are known.  Alternatively use a keyword search including the word "thesis".

Starting in 2010, UCT Libraries have been receiving electronic copies of UCT theses and making them available via our Open UCT

In general, UCT Libraries does not keep Honours Theses although some specific Branch Libraries may do so, in which case they will appear in our catalogue:  departments often keep their own copies but these are not reflected in the Libraries' catalogue.

To locate a particular thesis, search the online catalogue, using either the author's name or the title of the thesis.

In cases where you need to consult a thesis that has been completed at another university in South Africa, you can request it through Inter-Library Loans.

There are a number of Electronic Theses and Dissertations databases that index theses and provide access to web-based full-text collections in South Africa and worldwide.
